Follow me on twitter.
I’ve been busy the last few weeks. I thought of writing about New Year’s Resolution for my first post of the New Year but I guess that is too late now. We’ve already kicked in the first month of the New Year. Instead, let me talk about the path that I want this blog to take. Let me make it clear, though, that the main theme of this blog will remain as is – productivity at work and home office. But I want to expand the scope of this blog into few things I am interested in.
Technology
I am not sure yet how I want to tackle this. I’ve always wanted to host a tech-blog in which I share my take on emerging technologies. That’s too broad a topic, though. I think my domain name, productivitybits.com, would still be proper for this kind of content. Advancement in technology aims for overall productivity and efficiency – these two attributes constitute the core of this blog.
I am aware of the fact that I cannot just cover everything that has to do with technology. I must set my focus on particular aspect of technology. And I decided it to be Database and Cloud Computing. Again, I want to say that I am not veering away from the original concept of this blog. All this is meant to expand the scope of the blog which, I think, will improve the blog itself. My technology background has something to do with data; hence, the Database aspect. I actually have a separate blog for that – http://dbalink.wordpress.com. Cloud Computing is definitely a catalyst in the future of technology; that is why I have a growing interest in that subject.
Career Development
I am not sure to what depth I am willing to dive in this topic. Obviously, I am not a career advisor but I am in pursuit of career advancement myself so I might be sharing a lesson or two along the way. I also want to look into other people’s career and how they are adapting to rapid changes in their work environment.
I also want to look into non-traditional way of acquiring skills (informal training) that some professionals are taking to advance their career. I’ll probably talk about the events I am involved in which I think have either direct or indirect impact to my career in general.
Social Networking and Blogging
Although these two subjects may comfortably fit in the categories that I already mentioned above, I want to tackle them in the light of personal aspect – the relationships we build in the process. Social Networking and Blogging can take us to a different level of interaction.
I have already blogged about why blogging and interacting with people can be beneficial to our career. I want to look deeper into them and discover some other ways in which they can be more beneficial.
Separate Domain
I am also coming up with a new website this year. This site will exclusively contain my adventures in whatever stuff I am working on at any given time. Whether it’s personal project, volunteer job that I take up, technology sandbox that I am playing on, software that I am testing on my personal lab, technical review, and other stuff, you’ll see that on that new site.
Suggestions are welcome. If you think you have something that you want me to tackle, please email me at marlon@productivitybits. com.

I don’t think you can go wrong with topics like cloud computing or social networking as these are hot right now and in the foreseeable future. My New Year’s Resolution, albeit late as well, is “upgrade”. I have vowed to upgrade hardware, software, clothes, and my life in general. So far, so good.
I look forward to seeing you implement these new changes.
Technology can be a wonderful thing, as long as we are using it to be more efficient or effective, instead of letting it take over. I try to be careful about what I use and what I ignore, because it’s too easy to get sucked into time-wasting tech. Cloud computing is something that I’m slowly moving into, because it is more efficient for me. I have ready access to a computer for most of the day, and thus have no need of carrying my laptop around. By having my data in the cloud, I’m much more efficient.
Gonna head over and check out your database site, as I’m curious just what you have in mind.
Like you, I’m starting a new site this year, as I will be building a business for myself. Thus, the topics of career development are something else that I will be following closely.
@Matthew
I am glad that you’re doing great with your business. I really wanted to become an entrepreneur. This is one thing I really, really want to look into. I have some experience on tech consulting and I want to take that experience to some level.
I’ll watch our for your new business website. Maybe I can learn some stuff that I can use.
Marlon
Hi Marlon, interesting choice to blend productivity and cloud computing.
There are a ton of advantages to working in the cloud and there are a number of large companies using a cloud-based model with their employees – e.g. Google.
Look forward to your future posts.
Cheers
Thanks Chris for the comment.
In the immediate future we will see a trend in adopting cloud computing as a business platform. Like you said, there are a number of companies that are already taking advantage of cloud computing. But the primary reason for most of them is more on the reduction of operation cost. As the prices of cloud computing services drop, utilizing cloud computing will become a necessary process for productivity and efficiency, not merely because we want to save and cut cost.
