I recently upgraded my GTD Toolkit with the upgrade of my phone to the BlackBerry Bold 9780 with RIM’s latest OS BlackBerry version 6.0 (my old phone was Nokia E71).

I think this is a great phone and I have no complaints so far. The performance of the phone and its battery capacity are excellent.

The phone’s 512MB RAM is sufficient enough for the phone to operate smoothly. The phone comes with 2GB microSD (capacity is up to 32GB) which makes it a decent storage device for documents and other files.

My BlackBerry Bold 9780 became an extension of my productivity system right out of the box.

The built-in applications on the phone are enough to cover my basic need for productivity tools.

The Voice Notes Recorder is just what I need for recording voice notes when I need it on the run. The MemoPad is pretty basic but good enough. The Calendar app is slick.

It has all the functionalities that you would want in such an app – Set appointment, reminders, alerts, and many more. It integrates well with the Tasks app. But the Tasks app is a bare bone task management tool that lists your tasks according to sort order.

I need more than a basic Task app. With the different tasks that I do at work and at home, not to mention other activities outside of the two like volunteering/consulting on the side, I need more than a basic ToDo List that I can use to manage my daily tasks.

With that in mind, I installed the following FREE applications just to extend the capacity of the phone just a little bit:

BeamExplorer File Manager

It doesn’t give me the familiarity of exploring folders and subfolders like my desktop or laptop would.

With BeamExporer, I can expand and collapse folders and their contents quite easily. When searching for specific file, the built-in file manager can only display one folder at a time.

Cue

I don’t like missing important calls just because I forgot to turn my ringer back on after putting the cellphone in silent mode during a meeting.

Cue lets me create alerts on the fly without going to the calendar or clock to create a new alarm.

myTasks

I need a portable Task Manager that shows me the bird’s eye view of what it is like on my battleground.

I want that tool to be convenient and always available within reach even when the internet is down. That’s what myTasks can do, plus a lot more.

The dashboard can show what’s a day like. If you’re looking for a GTD-compliant Task Manager, this should be it.

What tools do you have on your phone and how do you use them?

    Hey Marlon,
I am also using BeamExplorer File Manager on my BlackBerry but I am having a problem with it. Its browsing speed of files is very poor even with 512MB RAM, is it only my problem or you are also facing this problem.
And please tell me any other BlackBerry Free App, with that I can change file names in bulk. I want to rename photographs as a new file name (my name+serial number).

      @Nazim

I am not sure why you are having speed problem. BeamExplorer’s integration to my BlackBerry 9780 is seamless. I have deleted all other applications that I am not using to free some space. When you close an application, do not just hit the return or cancel button. Make sure that you “close” the app so the system can release the memory.
